A 19th cen/18 century French toile du jouy in the "Grisaille" style after a drawing by JB Huet (1745-1811), I love the way this fabric has aged through time. Originally a natural neutral colored background which has darked over time and really brings out the motifs. Perfect for old world projects, framing, scraping, pillows etc.
Natural background color with brown motifs of musical instuments, country scenes, birds etc.
I believe the fabric was onced used as a wall covering based on old glue marks and upholstery nail holes at the edges. We have several pieces of the same fabric listed each with it's own characteristics. Look closely at the photos and you will decover some remarkable seams that match up the designs perfectly. All done by hand.
Photos are a good representation of actual color and condition.
Measurements
Actually 2 pieces of sewn together with a seam running from top to bottom
The entire piece measures
1 meter 72 cm from top to bottom
The width is
1 meter 65.5 cm across
Two large panels sewn together. One piece is selvage to selvage so it's a full run.
Condition
Left in it's beautiufully aged "as found" condition. Not laundered.
You will see upholstery nail holes and glue residue at the edges. This piece has some variation in aging and color. A portain along the top is lighter in color and obiously not exposed to the elements. An odd rectangular spot in the center of the fabric is lighter. I can't help but think that possibly a picture frame was in this spot at one time. Some smaller holes here and there and some small darker age spots. Lot of fabric in good condition with even color and full motifs for reuse. Or keep it in it's original state!
