I am not fotally familiar with this kind of fabric but believe it to be gingham. This fragment dates from the early 1800's. Fabrics front and back. I love the simple bold stitching. 

 

Front fabric stripes blue. A  small piece at two of the sides in a blue aubergine. 

 

Back: has a simple picotage V shaped design and is a caramel color. 

 

Photos are a good representation of actual color and condition.

Condition

 

Left in "as found" condition. 

 

Front fabric has a large hole off the center, an L shape ripped towards one side. Darned repair and thing areas. Small holes in aubergine fabric. 

 

Back fabric heavily distressed with large areas missing, holes and thin areas. 

 

In case you are thinking about taking the piece apart unpicking should go fairly quickly. 

 

Left in "as found" condition.
