I am not fotally familiar with this kind of fabric but believe it to be gingham. This fragment dates from the early 1800's. Fabrics front and back. I love the simple bold stitching. 
 
Front fabric a stripes blue with a piece to the side in a shade of darker blue.  
 
Back: has a simple picotage V shaped design  and is a caramel color. 
 
Photos are a good representation of actual color and condition.

Left in "as found" condition. 
 
Front: overall good condition with some small thin areas. 
 
Back: more distressed with holes, thin areas and larger areas of missing fabric.
 
In case you are thinking about taking the piece apart unpicking should go fairly quickly.
