Massive size. An early 1800's French toile du jouy quilt. Printed on linen Jouy en Josas 1806 Oberkampf. The "meunier" donkeys. Illustrates one of the fables de la Fontaine (book III, fable I). Drawn by JB Juet for the Roayl Manufacture of Jouy en Josas Oberkampf. Red printing on copper plate.

Linend at the back with chanvre linen.

Photos are a good representation of actual color and condition.

Measurements

The entire quilt measures

2 meters 15 cm from top to bottom x 2 meters 28 cm wide.

The quilt is made up mostly of 4 large panels that have been seamed together with some small pieces patched in here and there.

There are two long panels from top to bottom from center to right side.

One appears to be a selvage to selvage piece and measures

2 meters 15 cm from top to bottom x 90 cm wide (full repeats).

The piece at far right measures

2 meters 15 cm from top to bottom x 42 cm wide.

Then there are two pieces at the left side that have been turned sidewarys. They measure

92 cm from top to bottom x 90.5 cm wide and

92 cm from top to bottom x 89.5 cm wide

Further you will see small  (sewn in) pieces here and there to complete the size of the quilt.

Condition

The quilt has been left in "as found" condition.

Lightly quilted with big hand stitching. There is a small stain on the front and some soiling do to age but overall a good clean appearance with no obvious stains. There are a few holes in fabric along bottom edge and you will undoubtedly discover a couple more small very small holes on some other places but nothing major.

Most noticeable thing about the quilt is 3 patches of 19th century fabric. Two along the bottom and one further up from the bottom. The patches measure

12 x 18.5 cm

19.5 x 94.5 cm (this is the larger patch that runs at bottom edge)

9 x 14 cm

I'm sure the patches are there for a reason but probably have the original toile underneather.

The back was lined with pieces of chanvre linen which can be seen around the sides and has a very large patches of a chanvre linen (probably 19th century) at the center. There are some stains and some holes but the majority is still in good condition.
