A skein of vintage silver metallic embroidery thread-silver purl. French in origin. This is a stiff thread that can be used at is or slightly stretch out to create different affects. When placed on fabric it is often used to outline applique or embroidery work and has a row of pearls look.

Purls are made from a hard wire and coiled so that a hollow metal thread is made. This hollow threads looks like a string of beads and is pretty flexible. Can be formed into corners with the aid of tweezers with little problem. When purls are pulled and stretched, the wire becomes less flexible and rigid. This makes it easy to shape and handle when couched onto your gold work embroidery. As the purls are stretched, they begin to look similar to a string of pearls.
